Thomas Kilgallen had been a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) for over twelve years when he and his wife decided to separate amicably. Despite having worked in personal finance for so long, Thomas realized that he knew very little about the intricacies and potential pitfalls of dividing finances in a divorce. He therefore decided to acquire the Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA®) designation. Subsequently, he authored “The Divorce Financial Handbook”, so that others considering, going through, or post-divorce could navigate a somewhat overwhelming process with much greater ease and knowledge.
Because Thomas approaches the divorce process through the lens of a financial planner, he focuses on the sustainability of divorce outcomes rather than just the point-in-time “transaction” of a divorce settlement. His goal is to help ensure that his client’s divorce settlements are actually executable and practical in reality rather than just on paper. He guides his clients towards a sustainable financial lifestyle all the way through retirement and beyond.
Thomas has worked on both an individual basis and as a financial neutral in mediation and is also trained in the Collaborative Divorce Process. A major driver for his work is the desire to lower the stress, temperature, and uncertainty involved in divorce so that divorcing persons, their children, and their families look back on this challenging chapter in years to come knowing that the divorcing parties did their best to conduct themselves with as much honor and clear-headedness as was available to them at the time.
